Chemical industry jolts image with art
Wednesday, 12, May 2010
As he tries to reinvent the chemical industry's image from pollution-spewing plants to cutting-edge laboratories filled with smart, young professionals, Randy Dearth frequently turns to pop culture icon Andy Warhol.Colorful prints by the Pittsburgh-born artist line the wall outside Mr. Dearth's office at Lanxess Corp. Besides being president and CEO of the German chemicals company's North American operations, which are headquartered in RIDC Park West, Findlay, Mr. Dearth also chairs the board at the Warhol Museum on the North Side.
That job has allowed him to put the chemical industry on display a few times recently for audiences that don't typically associate chemistry and, well, hipness.Last year, Lanxess commissioned 15 artists to come up with ideas to celebrate 100 years of synthetic rubber -- one of Lanxess' products -- for an exhibit at the Warhol. Just before that exhibit opened in October, Mr. Dearth helped play host to first lady Michelle Obama and other spouses of world leaders who lunched at the museum during the G-20 summit.
